Disruptive tech innovations pick up major awards at SCG Bangkok Business Challenge @ Sasin 2019, Asia’s only global postgraduate startup competition

Bangkok – February 27, 2019: Bangkok’s Sasin School of Management is proud to reveal the winning teams from the SCG Bangkok Business Challenge @ Sasin 2019, organized in partnership with SCG and held over three days from February 21-23, 2019.

The theme for Asia’s only global postgraduate competition, Scaling Impact Through Innovation, saw 20 semi-finalists from around the world compete in the event. The BetterLife Monitor team from Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University was declared the overall winner of the competition, taking home the prestigious H.M. The King’s Award, graciously bestowed by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun. BetterLife Monitor is a non-invasive device that continuously monitors blood glucose levels to help diabetes sufferers. It is cost-effective and environmentally sustainable medical technology that provides a pain-free solution to disease control.

Amplify Infra, from the Indian School of Business, India, won the H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Sustainability Award. The team offers an IoT B2B marketplace for solar roof-top and EV charging stations bringing together a network of installers, capital, manufacturing and maintenance partners onto a single platform. The purpose of the project is to address energy generation and rising energy cost issues through a digital solution.

Sasin’s own Cheewid team was the winner of the Thailand Track. Cheewid brings an integrated awareness, action and impact tool for social causes in Thailand with tech tools aimed at fundraising, creating connections and enabling organizations to grow. The mission is to create the largest impact directory and digital social tools in the country.

The BetterLife Monitor team was also named as the Kasikornbank Start-Up Showcase Award co-winner. Sharing the prize was another team from the same university, NanoSiment, which offers a multifunctional bone cement for major orthopedic surgeries such as hip and knee procedures. The Kasikornbank Start-Up Showcase People’s Choice Award was given to NEATBio, from Taiwan’s National Chiao Tung University. NEATBio utilizes BioLab, an advanced nanoelectrode system to create a portable blood-testing device that measure biomarkers and delivers fast results for better patient care and to improve efficiency for hospitals. The team also took home US$1,000 prize, winning the Kasikornbank 60-Second Pitch Award.

The Director of Sasin School of Management, Paron Israsena Na Ayudhya, was impressed by this year’s teams. “The SCG Bangkok Business Challenge @ Sasin 2019 shows how innovation, tech disruption and start-ups need to be supported as well as how these projects can provide real-life solutions to pressing issues ranging from healthcare and wellness to energy, the environment and beyond. This year’s winners are creating products and services that could potentially be life-changing and by offering them a unique platform, we are proud to be part of what we hope is their future success.”

Following the official Awards Ceremony on Saturday afternoon, judges, sponsors, and VIP guests attended an Awards Dinner Cruise on the Chaophraya River on Saturday evening and the following day, many participants went on an optional cultural tour of Bangkok, courtesy of Sasin School of Management.

SCG Bangkok Business Challenge began in 2002 as the Bangkok Business Challenge (BBC). Sasin School of Management, in collaboration with Bangkok Business Newspaper, launched this business plan competition for graduate students to celebrate Sasin’s 20th anniversary, as well as the 15th anniversary of Bangkok Business Newspaper. The objective is to encourage post-graduate students in business administration programs to apply their knowledge of business and present their business plans to develop them for future investment. The competition was called the Bangkok Business Challenge and the winner has received the H.M. The King’s Award every year since its inception.
